ABBOTT'S ENSURE GOLD GIVES ELDERLY PARENTS STRENGTH FOR MOMENTS THAT MATTERJUNE 14, 2019 @ 6.08PM
![]() An integral part of caregiving is to recognize the signs of ageing and look at solutions to help parents live their life to the fullest. Good nutrition and exercise are key to a healthy and active life. Research shows nine out of 10 ageing adults fail to meet the daily amounts of key nutrients recommended for a healthy and active life.
To this end, Abbott launched the Ensure Gold Caregiver Campaign: Strength for the Moments That Matter in conjunction with Parents’ Month to educate caregivers on the role of nutrition in supporting their parents’ overall health and muscle strength. "We want to encourage caregivers to be mindful of muscle loss in their parents and to prioritise proper nutrition in caregiving so that their parents are able to continue doing the things they love and have renewed strength for the moments that matter,” said Robert Cleveland, General Manager of Abbott’s nutrition division in Malaysia. Nutrition for the moments that matter Most people are not aware that starting in their 40s, healthy adults can naturally lose up to 8% of muscle mass every decade, and after 70, that rate almost doubles up to 15%. For most caregivers, this isn’t physically evident until they notice their parents no longer have the strength to participate in family activities such as preparing snacks and meals together during festivals, going on holidays or simply enjoying a day out at the park. “Elderly parents are the first to admit that they just do not have the strength to participate meaningfully with their younger family members. Caregivers need to be aware of this and provide their elderly parents with both nutritional support and increased physical activity to combat muscle deterioration,’’ said Professor Dr Shahrul Bahyah Kamaruzzaman, Consultant Geriatrician, University Malaya Medical Centre. Jose Rodolfo V Dimaano Jr, Medical Director at Abbott’s nutrition business said that muscle loss can be slowed down and even reversed with proper nutrition. “It is important that caregivers recognise the importance of incorporating the right nutrients such as protein, vitamin D and muscle tissue building ingredient HMB into their parents’ daily diet. HMB is a metabolite of the essential amino acid leucine and has been shown to help the body regain strength. Ensure Gold is a complete and balanced nutrition supplement, scientifically formulated with HMB, triple protein blend, calcium, vitamin D and a total of 28 vitamins and minerals to help improve strength in as early as eight weeks.” Strength chair-lenge As part of the Ensure Gold Caregiver Campaign, Abbott has introduced a new chair challenge, a simple test where participants are asked to stand from sitting on a chair using only one leg and holding it for three seconds. For those who are unable to complete the test, the Strength Chair-lenge provides an indication on the likelihood of experiencing difficulty in walking or carrying out daily activities as they grow older. Additionally, it also serves as a reminder to caregivers on the possible struggles faced by their elderly parents in completing simple everyday activities. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
