PARODONTAX LAUNCHES NATIONWIDE CAMPAIGN ON GUM DISEASE

Periodontal disease, or gum disease, is commonly caused by the build-up of plaque bacteria along the gum line (where the gum meets the tooth), could affect 14.4 million or 94% of Malaysians. If left untreated, it may progress into a more serious form of gum disease, called periodontitis, which is irreversible and can cause tooth loss.
The prevalence rates of gum disease in Malaysia is high. The National Oral Health Survey of Adults (NOHSA) 2010 revealed more than one-quarter of the respondents (29.3%) had experienced at least one or more impacts of oral conditions on the oral health-related quality of life, and the proportion increased with age.
Although most oral health conditions are largely preventable, gum disease remains a public health issue. According to a GSK global research, many people suffer from bleeding gums and gum problems do nothing about it as they do not have enough information to guide them or educate them on how to detect early signs and symptoms of gum disease.
The Time Is Now
Recognising the need to improve Malaysians’ oral health literacy, parodontax, the gum protection toothpaste by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Consumer Healthcare, launched a nationwide campaign: ‘The Time Is Now’ - to educate and encourage consumers to fight against the devastating progression of gum disease.
Endorsed by the Malaysian Dental Association (MDA), the daily fluoride toothpaste is
specially designed for people who are prone to gum problems as it is clinically proven to help fight and prevent bleeding gums by aiding plaque removal.
“Healthy gums are key to maintain a healthy mouth, where gums work as the foundation for the teeth. Hence, it is important to be aware of the signs of gum disease so that one can act before the problems become irreversible. At an early stage, gum disease can seem unassuming; as a result, most sufferers regardless of age, ignore it and do not obtain early treatment,” said Bryan Wong, general manager of
GSK Consumer Healthcare Malaysia.
“As a brand that has a long history of protecting gum health, parodontax, through ‘The Time Is Now’ campaign, aims to raise awareness and educate Malaysians on the need to prevent gum disease and manage it more effectively,” Bryan added.
Adopting a holistic approach to inspire people to take action, ‘The Time Is Now’ campaign covers consumer and retail engagements on broadcast, digital, as well as social platforms - urging sufferers to fight the devastating progression of gum disease as the clock is ticking and the time to act is now.
‘The Time Is Now’ campaign will be extended to all Malaysians via parodontax website,
parodontax and Watsons digital platforms (Facebook & Instagram), and selected Watsons stores to support and increase the access to health knowledge which will help to enhance the quality of life of the overall population.
Do Not Ignore the Warning Signs Gum disease is commonly caused by plaque bacteria build-up along the gum lines. It starts as ‘gingivitis’, an inflammation of the gums around the teeth - often characterised by tenderness and redness. Consumers suffering from gum disease may experience early symptoms like bleeding gums while brushing or flossing their teeth. However, many overlook the symptom and mistake it as a sign of vigorous brushing. If left untreated, gum disease may cause bad breath, receding gums and eventually, leads to tooth loss.
“Whether you see blood daily or occasionally in the sink when you brush or floss your teeth, you should never ignore it as it could be a sign of bleeding gums. Most consumers do not realise bleeding gums is indeed a sign of a serious oral health problem – it is a warning sign that their gums need treatment,” said Rachel Gan, GSK Consumer Healthcare Malaysia, Singapore & Brunei Sales lead.
Parodontax toothpaste contains 67% sodium bicarbonate. The action of sodium bicarbonate helps to break up plaque bacteria that can irritate gums causing them to bleed.
Additionally, parodontax toothpaste is suitable for daily use as it contains fluoride to help strengthen teeth and also freshens breath.
