Do you feel that you are past your prime and muscle building is not for you? Think again. Sazali Samad; the 10 times Mr Universe is still going strong at 51.
“As you age, no doubt, muscle, bone and connecting tissue mass naturally decrease along with hormone production. However, bodybuilding can counteract this effect, in addition to making you look much younger than your actual age,” says Sazali. Daily routine Sazali’s routine consists of eight egg whites and four scoops of oatmeal and a scoop of protein in addition to vitamins on regular days - when he is not in a competition. At 11am, he has ‘Roti Telur’ while for lunch, he has chicken rice or Tom Yam, before he hits the gym to train at 2.30pm. During competitions, he has eight meals a day. “It all depends on an individual’s genetics. As for me with close to 30-years of experience, I know my body, thus I reduce oily foods which helps maintain the muscle mass even on days when I’m not in a competition,” he says. Getting buff with protein Sazali pointed out that protein shakes were popular among the bodybuilding community in the 90’s. He himself started consuming them then as an additional source of nutrition. But during that time, there were only three or four brands in the market, compared to today where sport-related protein product sector is booming with a wave of products. “Everyone needs protein in their diet on a daily basis as it is essential to body tissues, necessary for growth and contributes to muscle mass and bone health. But processing excess intake can put pressure on the kidneys. Nevertheless, if used correctly, it can bring positive results.” “There were times when I suffered from adverse effects and I would consult my doctor. He would then advise me to decrease my intake especially if the protein content was too high.” “Although protein shakes are easily available and seen as more efficient and convenient than having to eat large amounts of high-protein foods, body builders should first consult a doctor. They should also know that these supplements are merely an addition.” Sazali emphasised that the traditional method of building muscles by having a balance diet consisting of chicken, fish and meat are still a better option. Rice, he says can be consumed but in recommended portions. Key to success Getting buff requires more effort than merely sticking to a high protein diet. “Body building is now gaining popularity and the industry is growing. To succeed, one should be disciplined and be willing to make sacrifices, says Sazali who later explained that it should be done religiously in order to succeed.
