SEX THERAPY AND MARITAL COUNSELLING FOR THE DISABLED

Since the myth that persons with different abilities have no sexual needs has been dispelled, professional concern is now present for their sexual rehabilitation.
"The counselling process to approach the subject on sexuality and sex for those undergoing rehabilitation starts very early, ideally starting shortly after injury, surgery or disease," says Dr Kavitha Ratnalingam, Consultant Rehabilitation Physician, ReGen Rehabilitation International .
She explained that therapy for persons with different abilities may vary according to each individual - people with a stroke, older population, those who are married and settled down, traumatic brain injuries or spinal cord injuries in the younger population which more often happens to males who aren’t married or newly married.
“Some may have not developed a carrier so finances become an issue. That’s a topic that we would discuss with them especially if they are considering having a family, in order for them to cope financially,” she said.
Patients are referred either in couples or as singles, married or non-married touching on topics such as intimacy - the whole foreplay bid which can be fun.
As for the actual act itself, she says that it doesn’t have to be the traditional way.
“Sometimes, satisfying your partner can make you feel good and that helps your relationship as a whole.”
“In traumatic brain injury, patients can become more impulsive. They can have sexual disinhibition which may cause problems. At times, they may not feel like having sex or at times, they may feel like having sex all the time. And they may not have the social norms that supposed to inhibit in public spaces as they lose the ability to identify right from wrong.”
“So, we really need to speak to their family members and to their spouse as well on how to help them with this,” she added.
