Building positive relationships in families with autistic children
March 21, 2023
Raising a child with autism can be challenging, and it can also have an impact on siblings and other family members. Here are some tips for parents on how to support other children in the family while raising an autistic child:
Educate the siblings about autism: Teach siblings about their sibling's condition, what it means, and how it might affect their sibling's behavior. This can help siblings understand and empathise with their sibling, and also reduce any feelings of confusion or fear. Provide one-on-one time: Make sure that siblings have opportunities to spend time with parents one-on-one, without their autistic sibling present. This can help siblings feel valued and give them a break from any stress or chaos at home. Encourage open communication: Encourage siblings to express their feelings and concerns about their autistic sibling and how it affects them. Listen actively and validate their feelings, even if you can't always fix the problem. Foster a supportive environment: Encourage siblings to support each other and be understanding of their autistic sibling's behavior. Praise and reward positive interactions and good behavior between siblings. Seek support: Seek support from other parents in similar situations, or from a therapist or support group. This can provide a space for parents to discuss challenges and learn coping strategies, which can help them better support their children. Involve siblings in therapy: If your autistic child is receiving therapy, consider involving siblings in some sessions. This can help siblings learn more about autism and how to interact with their sibling in a positive and supportive way. Celebrate small victories: Celebrate and acknowledge your child's accomplishments, no matter how small. This can help all siblings feel positive and supported in the family. |
