iLawan Lupus' book on systemic lupus erythematosus debuts at Walk-a-Payung 2025May 30, 2025
The resilience of lupus warriors took center stage on May 25, as over 500 participants gathered at Laman Astaka, Taman Tasik Titiwangsa for the much-anticipated Walk-a-Payung 2025. This annual awareness walk, now a cornerstone event organized by SLE Malaysia Association (PSLEM), was held in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine and Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), in conjunction with World Lupus Day.
One of the event’s key highlights was the launch of "iLawan Lupus: A patient dialogue book on Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)," a collaborative initiative by AstraZeneca. This compelling collection brings to life the real voices, struggles, and triumphs of lupus patients, offering a heartfelt platform for empathy, awareness, and advocacy. The book not only sheds light on personal experiences but also serves as a bridge in communication between patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals—nurturing a deeper understanding of the chronic illness. A symbolic walk under umbrellas Participants walked 3km under umbrellas—a poignant symbol representing the daily challenges faced by people living with lupus, particularly sun sensitivity, which can trigger disease flare-ups. This simple yet powerful visual served as a reminder of the physical, emotional, and social burdens carried by lupus patients. Since its inception in 2007, Walk-a-Payung has grown into a flagship event for lupus awareness in Malaysia, demonstrating PSLEM’s unwavering commitment to empowering those affected. Currently, it is estimated that 43 in every 100,000 people are diagnosed with SLE, an autoimmune disease that disproportionately affects women in their reproductive years. “Lupus has no cure and can cause debilitating symptoms such as joint pain, organ damage, and extreme fatigue,” shared Professor Dr Syahrul Sazliyana Shaharir, President of PSLEM and Consultant Rheumatologist at HCTM UKM. “These challenges often go beyond physical health—they affect job security, financial stability, and emotional wellbeing. Events like Walk-a-Payung help raise much-needed public awareness while fostering a community of care and support.” A day of energy, unity, and support The event was officially launched by Dato’ Dr Norsiah Ali, Director at the Ministry of Health Malaysia, alongside Professor Dr Syahrul, setting the tone for a morning of unity and purpose. The day kicked off with an energetic zumba session led by the Royal Fitness Squad from Universiti Malaya, followed by a ceremonial flag-off to commence the 3km walk. Throughout the morning, families and supporters were treated to a variety of engaging activities including lucky draws, creative contests, and lively performances. One crowd favourite was the meet-and-greet with the 501st Legion Malaysia Garrison, who brought excitement and smiles to both children and adults alike. The Walk-a-Payung 2025 was more than an event—it was a movement. A gathering of advocates, patients, caregivers, and allies coming together to shine a light on lupus and reaffirm a shared commitment to compassion, inclusion, and empowerment. |
