In Indonesia, massage has been around for centuries, as depicted in the famous stone reliefs of Borobudor; the 8th-9th century Buddhist temple in Central Java. Elements of pressure point massage, acupressure and reflexology that were greatly influenced by Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine with the arrival of the Hindu religion in 400 A.D. and travelling Buddhist monks in Indonesia can be clearly discerned in most Indonesian massages.

Nazeera Muhamad Ali (pix), spa coordinator at Taman Sari Royal Heritage Spa Malaysia pointed out that massage in Indonesia is thought to help the body eliminate disease, regain its balance and ensure continued good health.

The two most common types of traditional massage are Pijit – used mainly for relaxing and toning while urut is used to treat bone fractures and muscular injuries. Pijit generally works only on the muscles, using medium to strong kneading and a repetitive squeezing movement of the flesh between the fingers and palm of the hand.

Compared to pijit, urut is more specialized and is normally used to treat bone fractures and muscular injuries. Urut can be quite painful at times, as it penetrates much deeper, working not only on the muscles, but also the nerve paths. Its main purpose is to heal and encourage good blood circulation.

“The Javanese massage is a whole body choreographed treatment, using medium deep tissue massage techniques. During this treatment, the therapist uses wonderful long strokes on skin lathered with scented oil. The massage aims to help with a wide range of ailments, including migraine, muscle and joint pain, sleep disorder, anxiety or depression. Most importantly, the Javanese massage carries compassion in the hand and puts the touch back into your being.

“For joint and muscular discomfort, massage should be done twice to three times a month. However, once a month would suffice if it is to relieve stress,” she said.

According to her, different strokes are used for different age groups – from babies, children from six to 12 years of age, adult to senior citizens and mothers who undergo postnatal treatment.

Although massage parlours are a plenty, Nazeera advised users to practice caution as untrained therapist may apply the wrong amount of pressure which may cause more harm than good.
