Baby carriers allows you to do chores around the house, working, cooking, going on a walk and more importantly - to be present for your other children.
Welcoming a newborn into your family is a moment of pure joy. However, the constant need for closeness, attention, and care from your baby can make daily tasks more challenging. For parents with younger children or those living alone, simple activities like texting, grocery shopping, or even taking a leisurely stroll become daunting.

The basics of baby carriers
When it comes to baby carriers, understanding the fundamentals is crucial. Here are key points to consider:

Babywearing from day one
Contrary to common misconceptions, you can start babywearing right from day one. As long as your baby weighs at least seven pounds, you can use a baby carrier. Ensure your baby meets the minimum weight requirement, or use an infant insert until they reach the appropriate weight.

Choosing the right baby carrier
Baby carriers come in various types, so thorough research is essential before making a purchase. Opt for an ergonomic baby carrier that evenly distributes your child's weight, providing comfort for you and proper support for your baby. While advanced models may be pricier, they offer extra functions and settings, allowing you to carry your child comfortably from infancy well into their toddler years.

Exploring different carrying positions
The age, weight and developmental stage of your baby determine the appropriate carrying position. Here are four positions to consider:
  • Front inward facing: Suitable from birth to infancy (0+ months)
  • Front outward facing: Ideal for babies with strong neck control (four to six months or later)
  • Hip carry: Recommended for babies six months and older
  • Back carry: Suitable for babies six months and older

Prioritize safety in babywearing
Safety should always be your top priority when babywearing. Follow these guidelines:
  • Keep your baby upright with adequate neck support.
  • Ensure their airways are clear, with their chin off their chest.
  • Keep your baby close to your body and higher up on your torso.
  • Maintain an ergonomic position with your baby's legs in a wide-leg, spread-squat position.
  • Check all carrier fasteners and inspect for fabric tears or holes.

Stay alert to your surroundings
Babywearing alters your center of gravity, increasing the risk of falls. Be cautious when navigating stairs, slippery surfaces, curbs, and other potential hazards. Remove the carrier if you need to lie down, and bend at your knees, not your waist, when bending down.

Appropriate activities while babywearing
Engaging in light physical activities like walking, hiking, or babywearing yoga while using a baby carrier is safe and enjoyable. However, avoid intense activities such as biking, running, skiing, or snowboarding.

Caution with hot liquids and foods
Lastly, it's crucial to exercise caution when consuming hot liquids or foods while babywearing to prevent accidents and burns. Keep your baby's sensitive head safe from unintended spills.

Incorporating babywearing into your daily routine can enhance both your convenience and your baby's comfort. By prioritizing safety and selecting the right carrier, you can enjoy the many benefits of this cherished parenting technique.
