Can Ayurveda offer a solution to gastrointestinal issues in autism?July 26, 2024
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects 1 in 100 children globally, making it a significant public health concern. As the prevalence of ASD continues to rise, there is an urgent need for comprehensive research and support systems to aid affected individuals and their families. Despite the availability of conventional therapies like speech-language pathology and occupational therapy, many underlying factors—such as genetic, toxic, and metabolic influences—remain underexplored, leaving families and individuals with ASD under considerable stress. As a result, many turn to complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) for additional support in managing autism.
Ayurveda: A cultural and holistic approach In India, Ayurveda is a widely practiced and respected method for managing various health conditions, including ASD. Rooted in cultural traditions, Ayurveda emphasizes treating the disease at its source, utilizing local resources, and addressing not just symptoms but also the individual's mental and emotional state. Dr Reshmi Pramod, Medical Director of Jeevaniyam Ayurveda Hospital and Research Centre (India), highlighted Ayurveda's unique approach to managing ASD during her presentation at the Association of Integrative Medicine Malaysia (AIMM)’s 5th International Integrative Medicine Conference 2024. According to Dr Reshmi, Ayurveda's holistic perspective makes it particularly effective in addressing the complexities of ASD, especially gastrointestinal (GI) issues commonly associated with the disorder. The link between gut health and autism GI problems, such as constipation, bloating, stomach discomfort, diarrhea, gastroesophageal reflux, and flatulence, are prevalent in 20-40% of individuals with ASD. These issues are often linked to dysbiosis, an imbalance of the gut microbiota, which plays a significant role in the pathophysiology of ASD. Research has consistently shown correlations between the severity of ASD symptoms and dysbiosis, highlighting the importance of managing gut health in these individuals. Ayurveda places a strong emphasis on maintaining a healthy gut as a foundation for overall well-being. Polyherbal formulations, lifestyle modifications, and dietary interventions are used to create a balanced ecosystem within the gut microbiome, which is essential for managing ASD. Ayurveda’s role in gut microbiome management Bifidobacterium, a significant species in the gut microbiome, has been found to play a crucial role in managing autism symptoms. Recent studies have shown that increasing the abundance of Bifidobacterium in the gut can help alleviate some of the challenges associated with ASD. Dr Reshmi shared insights from a study conducted at VPSV Ayurveda College, Kottakkal, India, involving 60 children with autism. The study divided participants into two groups: one receiving conventional multidisciplinary therapies and the other receiving these therapies alongside Ayurvedic polyherbal formulations (Vilwadi Gulika and Rajanyadi Choornam), dietary guidelines, and lifestyle instructions. The primary outcomes measured included the relative abundance of microbiomes using 16S RNA sequencing, as well as the Alpha and Beta diversity of the gut microbiome. The study revealed that even after 30 days of Ayurvedic treatment, the gut microbiome was optimized and retained during the follow-up period. This novel approach to managing the gut microbiome could pave the way for a more comprehensive and cost-effective strategy for autism management through Ayurveda. A comprehensive approach to autism Ayurveda’s approach to managing autism involves addressing three levels: the metaphysical (atma, manas, and buddhi), the biological (body and mind), and the energetic (consciousness). Dr Reshmi explained that Ayurvedic practices aim to connect the biological rhythms of the body with the higher mental functions, helping to manage sensory integration, sleep disorders, and other challenges associated with ASD. The Ayurvedic protocol for managing autism includes a combination of herbal therapies, gut-focused treatments, Ayurvedic lifestyle practices, parent training, and yogic assistance. By addressing the non-linear nature of both the human body and autism itself, Ayurveda offers a unique and effective approach to managing ASD. Autism is a complex and heterogeneous condition that requires a multifaceted approach. Ayurveda, with its holistic and non-linear methods, provides a promising complementary and alternative option for managing ASD. As Dr Reshmi aptly put it, "The gut is a Pandora's box, and together, let's try to unravel the mystery of our gut and create a society with balanced physical and emotional well-being." |
