Does spicy food affect your prostate health?
December 14, 2018
Some foods can help reduce the risk of developing Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), while others may actually aggravate the problem. Identifying the main culprits can help you manage your symptoms better.
Spicy food Foods such as curries, chili, and hot sauces can enhance the flavor of your meal. However, spicy and acidic foods can irritate the bladder and prostate in some men, causing urinary symptoms associated with BPH. If you notice more problems after consuming such spicy or acidic foods, it’s best to avoid them altogether. Red meat A juicy steak, a succulent lamb curry, or beef kebabs are just a few popular dinner choices that tempt many Malaysians. Nevertheless, red meat elevates levels of arachidonic acid in your body, which in turn increases inflammation—the very thing your prostate does not need! That said, egg yolks also contain high levels of arachidonic acid. If you don’t want to give up eggs completely, consider eating only the egg whites, which are a good source of protein. Processed foods and sugar Highly processed foods such as ready meals, crisps, fizzy drinks, cereals, and canned goods often contain refined sugars that may increase inflammation of the prostate. Try swapping these for fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and chicken, which are nutritious and healthy options. Caffeine Caffeine from coffee, tea, and fizzy drinks has a diuretic effect that can increase your urge to urinate. Consuming these beverages, especially late at night, can irritate the bladder, leading to frequent bathroom visits and interrupted sleep. Maintain optimal prostate health with these healthy choices Tomatoes Tomatoes are an excellent source of lycopene, which is critical for prostate health. While fresh tomatoes are nutritious, their lycopene antioxidant potency increases when processed. Processing breaks down the cell walls of tomatoes, making lycopene more accessible to the body. Therefore, tomato paste, sauce, soup, and juice provide more antioxidant protection for the prostate than fresh tomatoes. Wild-caught fish Omega-3-rich foods like salmon, tuna, herring, and anchovies help reduce inflammation of the prostate. Green tea Green tea is beneficial for anti-aging because it contains high levels of antioxidants, promotes detoxification, and supports prostate health. Pumpkin seeds Pumpkin seeds and pumpkin seed oil benefit prostate health due to their high content of carotenoids and liposoluble vitamins. Pumpkin seeds contain zinc, which acts as a diuretic to help empty the bladder, and they also reduce inflammation. This can be helpful in managing an enlarged prostate that causes urination issues. Vitamin E Vitamin E serves as an antioxidant in the body and may decrease the incidence of prostate cancer. Vitamin D Research conducted at Boston University School of Medicine indicates an association between decreased sun exposure or vitamin D deficiency and an increased risk of prostate cancer at an earlier age, with more aggressive progression. Therefore, adequate vitamin D nutrition should be a priority for men of all ages. Zinc Infection, stress, and diet influence zinc levels, which are often significantly reduced in individuals with prostate problems. Fish oil Fish oil is known to reduce inflammation, which may lead to prostatitis and prostate cancer. |
