In the ever-evolving landscape of healthcare, the quest for enhanced diagnostic accuracy continues to drive innovation. The utilization of emerging technologies in medical imaging is poised to revolutionize the field, offering unparalleled insights into various pathological conditions.

Digital mammography and digital breast tomosynthesis
Digital mammography (DM) and digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) represent significant strides in breast cancer detection.

"With higher image resolution and advanced processing techniques, DM and DBT have greatly improved the identification of breast cancer, particularly in women with dense breast tissue. Moreover, the integration of computer-aided detection (CAD) algorithms and artificial intelligence (AI) further enhances diagnostic accuracy by assisting radiologists in identifying suspicious lesions and reducing false-positive rates," says Emeritus Professor Dr Ng Kwan Hoong (pix), Medical Physicist, University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC).

He was presenting at the recently concluded Future Healthcare Asia conference.

Precision medicine in PET-CT imaging
The combination of positron emission tomography (PET) with computed tomography (CT) imaging has ushered in a new era of precision medicine. PET-CT enables the simultaneous visualization of metabolic activity and anatomical structures, facilitating precise tumor localization, accurate disease staging, and personalized treatment strategies in oncology. Recent studies underscore the potential of AI assistive software in enhancing the diagnostic accuracy of PET-CT imaging, particularly in monitoring amyloid-related imaging abnormalities associated with Alzheimer's disease.

Improved stroke diagnosis with diffusion-weighted MRI
As for stroke diagnosis, Emeritus Professor Dr Ng Kwan Hoong went on to explain that the diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) has emerged as a valuable tool in the early detection of acute ischemic stroke. "By detecting areas of restricted diffusion within the brain, DW-MRI enables prompt administration of reperfusion therapies, minimizing brain damage and disability. This technology represents a significant advancement in stroke diagnosis and management, underscoring the importance of timely intervention in improving patient outcomes".

Shear-wave elastography: A non-invasive approach to tissue assessment
Shear-wave elastography (SWE) offers a non-invasive method for assessing tissue stiffness, providing valuable insights into various pathological conditions. By quantifying tissue elasticity, SWE complements traditional imaging modalities such as ultrasound, MRI, and CT, with promising applications in liver fibrosis evaluation and breast cancer diagnostics. SWE guidance during core-needle biopsy procedures can further enhance diagnostic accuracy, leading to more targeted and effective patient care.

Photon counting CT (PCD-CT) and radiomics
Photon counting CT (PCD-CT) promises improved spatial resolution and spectral data quality, offering enhanced diagnostic capabilities across various clinical scenarios. Additionally, radiomics, a burgeoning field in medical imaging, involves the extraction of data beyond what is visible to the naked eye, paving the way for personalized treatment approaches and therapeutic innovations. The integration of theranostics and radiomics holds tremendous potential in advancing precision medicine, allowing for the development of tailored diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for individual patients.

Artificial intelligence: Navigating the hype cycle
As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to permeate various facets of healthcare, managing expectations becomes paramount. The AI hype cycle, characterized by phases such as innovation triggers, peak expectations, and the trough of disillusionment, underscores the need for a balanced approach to AI integration. By leveraging AI technologies responsibly and ethically, healthcare providers can harness the full potential of AI to improve patient outcomes and drive innovation in medical imaging.

The integration of emerging technologies in diagnostic imaging represents a paradigm shift in healthcare, offering unprecedented opportunities for enhanced diagnostic accuracy, personalized treatment approaches, and improved patient care. As we continue to push the boundaries of medical innovation, collaboration between clinicians, researchers, and technology developers will be essential in realizing the full potential of these transformative technologies.
