Enhancing intimacy and communication: Sexual therapy and marriage counseling for people with disabilitiesDecember 24, 2018
The misconception that individuals with disabilities do not have sexual needs has been debunked, leading to an increased focus on their sexual rehabilitation.
The counseling process for sexuality and sex education for those undergoing rehabilitation should ideally start shortly after injury, surgery or disease. Therapy for persons with disabilities varies according to their individual needs, such as those who have suffered from a stroke, the elderly population, those who are married and settled down, or those who have had traumatic brain or spinal cord injuries. Therapy is personalized, as some patients may have financial concerns, which may affect their ability to start a family. Counselors would discuss these issues with them to help them cope financially, especially if they are considering starting a family. Patients may attend therapy sessions alone or as couples, and the sessions focus on topics such as intimacy and foreplay. Regarding the actual sexual act, it does not have to be traditional. Patients are encouraged to focus on satisfying their partners as it can help improve their overall relationship. However, in cases of traumatic brain injury, patients may experience sexual disinhibition or impulsive behavior that may cause problems. Family members and spouses are involved in these cases to help the patient cope and overcome these challenges. |
