In contemporary healthcare settings, clinicians often find themselves navigating cumbersome electronic medical record (EMR) systems, dividing their time between patient care and administrative tasks. This scenario, as described by Professor Dr Teh Pei Lee (pix), Director of Monash University Malaysia at the Future Healthcare Asia conference, exemplifies the challenges faced by healthcare professionals worldwide. However, amidst these challenges lies a transformative force—machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI)—poised to revolutionize the healthcare system.

The rise of digital health
The World Health Organization (WHO) has spearheaded the global adoption of digital health strategies, recognizing its potential to enhance healthcare delivery. With initiatives such as the Global Digital Health Strategy (2020-2025) and the Digital Implementation Investment Guide (DICE), WHO has laid the groundwork for integrating digital technologies into healthcare systems worldwide. Collaborative efforts with organizations like UNICEF have further propelled the development of Digital Health Centers of Excellence, fostering innovation and knowledge exchange.

Key developments and hallmarks of digital health
The timeline of digital health evolution highlights pivotal moments, including the classification of digital health interventions by WHO, the launch of SMART guidelines, and the endorsement of health data governance principles by the World Bank. "Central to this evolution are digital biomarkers, which harness physiological and behavioral data collected through wearable devices to predict health outcomes accurately. Examples such as MIT's research on digital biomarkers for Parkinson's disease showcase the potential to revolutionize disease detection and management," adds Professor Dr Teh Pei Lee.

AI in healthcare
While AI is poised to augment healthcare professionals' capabilities, it is essential to emphasize its role as a supportive tool rather than a replacement. AI-powered solutions, such as skin cancer detection through image analysis, demonstrate the synergy between technology and clinical expertise. Moreover, the integration of AI assistants in medical imaging, as exemplified by OXIPIT ChestEye Quality, illustrates how AI complements radiologists' workflow, enhancing diagnostic accuracy and efficiency.

Digital-in-health
The concept of digital-in-health encapsulates the convergence of digital technologies and healthcare, transcending traditional paradigms. This paradigm shift encompasses cultural and structural transformations in healthcare service delivery, prioritizing patient engagement, personalized care, and preventive health measures. Microsoft's data analytics platform for healthcare exemplifies this shift, unifying disparate data sources to empower clinicians with actionable insights.

The future landscape of healthcare
Looking ahead, the future of healthcare lies in embracing interoperable systems, patient-centric approaches, and proactive health management. By leveraging ML and AI, healthcare stakeholders can unlock the full potential of digital technologies, ushering in an era of personalized, data-driven care. As we transition from digitalization to digital-in-health, the emphasis shifts from technology-centric solutions to problem-solving approaches that address the diverse needs of patients and providers alike.
