At the 5th International Integrative Medicine Conference 2024, themed "Healthspan - The Science and Art of Wellbeing," Professor Dr Vijay Anand (pix), Founder of Dr Vijay’s Autism Foundation in India, discussed the intriguing relationship between autism and hypoxia.

Hypoxia, or lack of oxygen, during pregnancy may play a significant role in the development of autism, and this connection is garnering increasing attention in both scientific and homeopathic circles.

Homeopathy’s role in autism
While autism cannot be cured, homeopathy has shown promise in improving symptoms. According to Dr Vijay, homeopathy is particularly effective in addressing various aspects of autism. However, many people demand scientific proof to validate homeopathic treatments. Dr Vijay highlights that homeopathy can now be supported by evidence-based practices, particularly through the use of nanoparticles.

Causes of autism: Beyond genetics
Autism can arise from multiple factors, including physical trauma in children, emotional trauma in mothers and children, allopathic medications consumed by the mother, vaccinations, and preceding infections. However, genetics play a relatively minor role. Dr Vijay emphasizes that the journey from conception to delivery significantly influences a baby's health, particularly mental health. The villain behind autism, according to Dr Vijay, is often hypoxia, which can result from various conditions such as low amniotic fluid, breech position, meconium staining, and stress during pregnancy.

The role of oxygen during pregnancy
Hypoxia, or reduced oxygen supply to the brain, is a critical factor in autism. During pregnancy, several conditions can induce hypoxia. In the first trimester, many mothers do not take essential iron tablets, crucial for umbilical cord development. In the second and third trimesters, monitoring blood pressure, sugar levels, and thyroid function is vital, as abnormalities can lead to hypoxia. Even brief episodes of hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, hypotension, or hypertension can contribute to this condition.

Psychosomatic stress and hypoxia
Psychosomatic stress during pregnancy can also lead to hypoxia. Dr Vijay underscores the importance of recognizing and managing stress to mitigate this risk. Monitoring amniotic fluid levels is essential, as leakage can result in hypoxia. Pregnant women should be vigilant about the position of the fetus, particularly in the later stages of pregnancy, to avoid complications such as umbilical cord compression, which can also lead to hypoxia.

Investigations and diagnostic tools
Currently, no definitive investigation can predict autism caused by hypoxia. Artificial intelligence and digital cameras with sensor technology are being developed to analyze facial structures and other indicators, but these tools require extensive data to be effective.

Indicators of hypoxia and autism
Labor complications can also indicate potential hypoxia and subsequent autism. During delivery, complications may necessitate an emergency C-section. Indicators such as skin discoloration, lack of crying, and difficulty latching onto milk can signal hypoxia. Parents often start noticing signs of autism around 18 to 24 months, including sensory processing issues and atypical behaviors.

Sensory patterns in autism
Children with autism may exhibit impairments in processing sensory input, affecting touch, sound, smell, and vision. Many children with autism are hyperactive, displaying impulsivity and sometimes violent behavior without aggression. Others may be in a regressive state, marked by passivity and unusual behaviors such as genital rubbing or eating non-food items. These behaviors should be addressed between the ages of two and five, a critical period for intervention.

Homeopathic treatments for autism
In homeopathy, treatments such as cannabis indica nanoparticles can help improve speech when applied to the tongue. Selecting the right medicine and dosage is crucial, with high-functioning children requiring infrequent doses, while those with moderate to severe autism may need repeated treatments. Dr Vijay emphasizes that these treatments should be administered by experienced physicians.

Clinical evidence and auxiliary measures
Evidence-based practice in homeopathy involves data-based decision-making, individual and family preferences, and professional judgment. Modern methods incorporate images, audio, and video to support traditional information and theories. Auxiliary measures such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, sensory integration, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy can complement homeopathic treatments.

The path forward
While the connection between hypoxia and autism is still being explored, understanding and addressing factors that lead to hypoxia during pregnancy can potentially reduce the risk of autism. As research continues to evolve, integrating homeopathy and other complementary therapies offers hope for improving the lives of those with autism.
