Fostering peer support: Empowering advanced breast cancer patientsFebruary 20, 2024
In a collaborative effort between the National Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM) and Beacon Hospital, supported by Novartis Malaysia, a groundbreaking event titled "Gift Of Time" was recently hosted. This event marked a celebration of survivorship among breast cancer patients, aiming to cultivate a sense of community and mutual support among those facing advanced breast cancer (aBC).
Peer support system The day-long event, dedicated to honoring the resilience of breast cancer survivors, featured an array of activities including wellness talks, survivor-sharing sessions, and mindfulness exercises. The overarching goal was to establish a platform where breast cancer survivors could come together, fostering a robust peer support system for those navigating the challenges of advanced stages of the disease. This initiative is particularly crucial considering the findings that highlight the unmet needs of aBC patients, including the necessity for peer support. Shockingly, 47.9% of breast cancer cases in Malaysia are detected at stages III and IV, underscoring the urgency of addressing these needs. To raise awareness about the importance of early detection and available treatment options, advocates and healthcare professionals delivered informative sessions during the event. Additionally, patients were encouraged to seek assistance from patient support programs and advocacy groups, emphasizing the significance of a holistic approach to cancer care. Inspiring story of resilience Among the inspiring stories shared during the event was that of Ta Huey Mein, a 50-year-old breast cancer survivor who was diagnosed with aBC at the age of 48. Despite facing numerous challenges, including being single and caring for elderly parents, Ta approached her diagnosis with courage and determination. Following conventional treatments and eventually accessing innovative therapies, Ta not only managed to control her cancer but also maintained a semblance of normalcy in her life, refusing to let the disease dictate her future. Reflecting on her journey, Ta offered words of wisdom to others in similar situations, emphasizing the importance of staying positive and seeking accurate medical guidance. Her story serves as a beacon of hope, reminding fellow survivors that they are not alone in their battle against breast cancer. The transformative impact of peer support Dr Tho Lye Mun, Head of Oncology at Beacon Hospital, emphasized the transformative power of peer support, highlighting how connecting with fellow survivors can provide invaluable emotional support and strength. Dr Murallitharan Munisamy, Managing Director of NCSM, echoed this sentiment, urging survivors to prioritize not only their physical well-being but also their emotional and financial needs throughout their journey. Mohamed Elwakil, Country President for Novartis Malaysia, underscored the importance of initiatives like "Gift of Time," which cater to the unique needs of aBC patients. By providing platforms for survivors to forge new connections and draw strength from one another, Novartis aims to contribute to their overall well-being and long-term survival. Fostering peer support among advanced breast cancer patients is not just a luxury but a necessity. By creating spaces where survivors can come together, share their experiences, and draw strength from one another, we can empower them to navigate their journey with resilience and hope. Together, we can strive towards a future where every breast cancer survivor receives the support and care they deserve. |
