IHH Healthcare Malaysia champions solar power adoption across its entire hospital networkApril 29, 2024
In a groundbreaking move towards sustainable healthcare, Jean-François Naa, Chief Executive Officer of IHH Healthcare Malaysia, announced the company's ambitious plans to transition all its hospitals to renewable energy sources by 2025. With a network of 17 hospitals, including esteemed institutions like Pantai Hospitals, Gleneagles Hospitals, Prince Court Medical Centre, and Timberland Medical Centre, IHH Malaysia aims to set a new standard for environmental stewardship in the healthcare sector.
Commitment to sustainable healthcare Jean-François emphasized IHH Malaysia's unwavering commitment to sustainable healthcare, guided by four core focus areas: patient, public, people, and planet. These pillars encapsulate the company's dedication to delivering superior patient care while minimizing its environmental footprint and contributing positively to the community. As demand for private healthcare services grows, IHH Malaysia remains dedicated to expanding access for patients while prioritizing environmental sustainability. Transitioning to renewable energy Recognizing the environmental impact of healthcare operations, IHH Malaysia embarked on a journey towards sustainability, focusing initially on energy consumption. With electricity accounting for over 75% of direct greenhouse gas emissions, the company opted to adopt renewable energy solutions. To date, eight hospitals have successfully transitioned to solar power, with plans for all hospitals to follow suit by 2025. This extensive rollout of solar projects positions IHH Malaysia as a trailblazer in the private healthcare sector's transition to renewable energy. "Our broader goal is to cap carbon growth by 2025 and achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050. We want to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and be more sustainable, which is part of our commitment to meeting our Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) objectives. "Moving forward, we intend to continue transitioning to green energy with offsite solar projects and Virtual Power Purchase Agreements. "Beyond renewable energy, we are also at the forefront of addressing environmental challenges through elimination of single-use virgin plastics - all across our hospitals - we have started this initiative almost 4-years ago, waste management, water conservation measures and energy-efficient building fixtures - as part of our renovations and also new blocks and new hospitals. "Our initiatives are not only environmentally impactful but also grounded in financial viability, transparency, and strategic alignment with global goals, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals," he said. National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) IHH Malaysia's sustainability efforts align closely with the government's National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), which aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The NETR initiative encompasses ten pioneering projects focused on energy efficiency, renewable energy, hydrogen, bio-energy, green mobility, and carbon capture and utilization (CCU). These projects are projected to attract investments of 25 billion ringgit, create 23,000 job opportunities, and significantly reduce the country's carbon emissions. Government collaboration and future outlook Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof lauded IHH Healthcare Malaysia's efforts towards sustainability and renewable energy adoption. The government is planning initiatives to encourage the installation and utilization of solar energy systems in government hospitals through collaboration with the private sector. This collaborative approach underscores Malaysia's commitment to achieving its environmental goals while fostering economic growth and innovation. Strategic partnerships for a sustainable future IHH Healthcare Malaysia's strategic partnership with Ditrolic Energy, one of the region's largest renewable energy developers, underscores its commitment to sustainability. By leveraging rooftop spaces across its hospital network for solar panel installation, IHH Malaysia is poised to achieve its goal of complete solar energy adoption by 2025. This initiative represents a significant step towards Malaysia's broader objective of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions and building a more sustainable future for all. |
