In partnership with the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM), Etiqa launched its Free Mammogram Programme – Phase 5 this week. This is the fifth phase of NCSM and Etiqa’s commitment to address Malaysian women’s health, this time by providing free mammogram for 4,500 underprivileged women, aged 40 and above.
This phase is different from the rest, with the introduction of Etiqa’s national mobile screening clinic, aiming to provide free breast cancer screening and detection for 50,000 women in both rural and urban areas. Funded by Etiqa and implemented in collaboration with NCSM, the one-year, nationwide programme is worth RM 2.01 million, and falls under Etiqa Cares, Etiqa’s flagship corporate responsibility commitment towards healthy living. Launched at Menara Etiqa, the event was witnessed by Dr Mastura Ismail, Deputy Director Family Health Development, Ministry of Health Malaysia, Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz, Principal Patron of National Cancer Society Malaysia, Datuk R Karunakaran, Chairman of Maybank Ageas Holdings Berhad, Norlia Mat Yusuf, Chief Investment Officer, Etiqa, Dato’ Dr Saunthari Somasundaram, President of the National Cancer Society Malaysia and invited guests. Seeing and hearing first-hand the impact of the programme on women’s lives is the kind of difference that Etiqa wishes to make to the community.” he added. The Etiqa’s national mobile health screening clinic is designed to be as functional as a clinic at large. With a doctor on board, the mobile clinic is also able to receive any emergencies as it is equipped with an automated external defibrillator and an emergency trolley. The modern day custom-made mobile screening clinic features: • One examination bed to conduct clinical breast examination, iBreast and pap smear • Retractable awning to provide shade and comfort to patients accessing the facility • Internet enabled with WiFi access • Built-in oxygen port for emergencies • Medication fridge to store vaccines and medicine on board • A power chair lift is installed in the vehicle to assist patients using wheelchair-friendly to be raised into the mobile truck • Solar panels installed on the roof allow the clinic to continue its services on board in rural areas comfortably. Once fully charged, the solar panels can last up to eight hours. Launched in 2017, Phase 1 to Phase 4 of the programme was successfully completed, where a total of RM7.8million was contributed towards free mammograms that have benefitted 23,000 underprivileged women across Peninsular Malaysia. During the event, Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz said with the introduction of the mobile screening clinics, NCSM and Etiqa will be able to provide breast cancer screening and detection to underprivileged women more effectively. “Through the NCSM and Etiqa collaboration, we have managed to screen more than 23,000 underprivileged women and bridge the gap between awareness and non-awareness, to which I hope this collaboration will continue,” said Tan Sri Rafidah. Multiple partners have been enrolled on the programme to provide comprehensive, timely support to the participants. This includes partner private hospitals with mammography services in various states across Peninsular Malaysia, as well as partner organisations who have strong relationships and proven history of working with underprivileged communities to enable penetration and uptake from the targeted participant groups. NCSM works with local communities and NGOs across the country to identify underprivileged women for this free mammogram programme. Eligible women and interested community leaders are encouraged to call 03-2698 7300 from Monday to Friday, between 8.30am to 4.30pm.
