Regency Specialist Hospital (RSH) earned a place in the Malaysian Book of Records with the highest number of HbA1c screenings within three days. This achievement was accomplished during the hospital’s Diabetes Care Community Screening held from 28 to 30 June 2024 at the soon-to-open Regency Medical Care Centre (RMCC) at The Mall, Mid Valley Southkey, Johor Bahru.

The event, graced by esteemed guests including, Ling Tian Soon, Johor Health and Environment Committee Chairman, served as a beacon of health awareness, rallying together 3,148 participants for HbA1c diabetes screenings.

The 2023 National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) found that 84% of young adults (18-29) were unaware they have diabetes. The report also highlighted that 2 in 5 adults who are diabetic own a glucometer that is used to measure the amount of glucose in the body. As diabetes continues to pose a significant health challenge, RSH's initiative aimed to foster a culture of proactive health management and early intervention, thereby mitigating associated risks and improving long-term health outcomes.

Over three days, participants enjoyed complimentary access to vital health assessments, with HbA1c diabetes screenings followed by immediate result reading and on-site consultations with healthcare professionals. Attendees also received specialized Fundus eye tests to meet the needs of senior citizens. In addition to informative health talks and a daily lucky draw, the event also collaborated with local businesses, who generously offered discounts and promotions related to health and wellness, enriching the experience for all attendees.

Early detection crucial
During the ceremony, a video testimonial of Yoon Hui Min, a patient with diabetes, who shared the importance of early intervention, was displayed. “Diabetes is a manageable disease, however early detection is crucial. I was admitted to Regency due to dengue. My doctor noticed that I was always feeling tired and conducted a blood test, revealing high blood sugar levels. After consulting with a dietician, I changed my diet and began regularly exercising and monitoring my blood glucose levels. Three months later, my sugar levels improved significantly. Prevention is better than cure, so I urge everyone to get yourselves checked for diabetes,” shared Yoon Hui Min.

Timely intervention and management are key to curbing the onset of diabetes-related complications. Dr Luqman Ibrahim, Consultant Endocrinologist at the hospital says that a lot of patients have trouble managing their diabetes while some people are not even aware that they have diabetes. These screenings are part of the on-going outreach to promote a healthy lifestyle in the community, which includes regular check-ups for well-being. To avoid long-term health issues, early diagnosis, and intervention are essential.
