Sunway Medical Centre launches CSR radiotherapy program for cancer in Sarawak

Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City (SMC), launched its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Radiotherapy program and hosted a public health forum - Fearless Against Cancer, Innovation in Cancer Treatment at the Imperial Hotel Kuching recently.
The event was inaugurated by Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian and Dr Seow Vei Ken, Chief Executive Officer of SMC, both of whom expressed their support and commitment to advancing cancer care and treatment, launched the CSR program, underscoring SMC's commitment to making advanced cancer treatments accessible to all communities, including those in Sarawak. The event was also a remarkable collaboration with Junior Chamber International Kuching (JCI Kuching), Sunway Traditional and Complementary Medicine (TCM) Kuching, and the Society for Cancer Advocacy and Awareness Kuching (SCAN). Sarawak ranks the 5th with the highest cancer incidence rates According to the Malaysian National Cancer Registry 2012–2016, Sarawak is recorded as the state with the 5th highest cancer incidence rates. The state reportedly recorded 2,300 new cancer cases annually. The CSR radiotherapy program is an initiative to improving patient outcomes and quality of life through advanced cancer treatment and comprehensive care. "The launching of the CSR radiotherapy program is a testament to our unwavering commitment to cancer advocacy and awareness. By offering affordable radiotherapy services and advanced treatment options, we aim to alleviate the financial burden on cancer patients in Sarawak, ensuring they can focus on their recovery with dignity and peace of mind. Together, through collaborative efforts and community support, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected by cancer in the Sarawak community and beyond," he said. Expert-led discussion on advanced cancer care In Malaysia, with 1 in 9 Malaysian men and 1 in 10 Malaysian women at risk of developing cancer in their lifetime, esteemed consultants from a multidisciplinary team provided invaluable insights into cutting-edge cancer treatments. Consultant Neurosurgeon, Spine and Interventional Pain Specialist, Dr Toh delivered a compelling talk on minimal invasive neurosurgery. Highlighting the advantages of minimally invasive surgery, Dr Toh said that utilizing advanced technologies and minimally invasive surgical techniques can achieve precise targeting of affected areas with minimal disruption to surrounding tissues. This approach not only improves patient outcomes but also enhances their overall quality of life by allowing for quicker returns to daily activities and reducing the risks associated with traditional open surgeries This was then followed by a talk by Clinical Oncologist Dr. Ivan Shew, who captivated the audience with his presentation on innovations in cancer treatment for more effective and personalized care. He highlighted advanced technologies like targeted therapies, immunotherapy, and precision imaging that tailor treatments to each patient's unique needs, improving survival rates and quality of life. The event not only provided a platform for promoting a healthy lifestyle but also facilitated the exchange of knowledge on cancer and its treatment options.
