The overlooked connection: Medical disorders and mental health misdiagnosis
April 29, 2025
Approximately 9.1% of psychiatric patients are found to have undiagnosed medical disorders that contribute to their symptoms. For instance, a physical illness may present itself as depression.
“Medical misdiagnosis occurs when we hastily assign mental health labels without first investigating potential physical causes,” warns Dr Eric Arzubi, CEO of Frontier Psychiatry. This oversight can lead to dangerous consequences. Here are some physical conditions that can mimic depression: Thyroid problems Symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, and weight fluctuations are often dismissed as mere depression. A simple blood test can reveal thyroid issues. Vitamin deficiencies Deficiencies in B12 and folate can significantly impact mood and lead to energy loss and cognitive decline. Fortunately, treatment is straightforward when these deficiencies are identified. Sleep disorders Conditions like sleep apnea disrupt restorative sleep, resulting in daytime fatigue that is frequently mistaken for depression. Alarmingly, 80% of cases remain undiagnosed. Neurological conditions Diseases such as Parkinson's can affect mood before presenting motor symptoms, while seizure disorders may also mimic depressive symptoms. Each condition necessitates specialized treatment. Chronic infections Infections like Lyme disease and HIV can influence mood and produce persistent symptoms resembling depression. Failing to diagnose these conditions can result in years of unnecessary suffering. The recurring theme is clear: when mental health diagnoses are rushed, we risk overlooking medical conditions that share similar symptoms. Effective mental health care begins with thorough physical health screenings. Any practitioner who neglects to rule out these possibilities is not adhering to evidence-based medicine. Accurate diagnosis can transform lives. |
