Damai Pain Care & Wellness PLT is organizing a Basic Life Support (BLS) course. This course will be conducted by experienced and trained American Heart Association (AHA) certified instructors from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).

Basic Life Support (BLS) is the life-saving skill in daily life. The skills of high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for cardiac arrest victims of all ages as a single rescuer and as a member of a multi-rescuer team. The purpose of learning Basic Life Support is to ensure that the community can recognise cardiac arrest, activate emergency response early, and respond quickly and confidently.

Despite important advances in prevention, sudden cardiac arrest remains a leading cause of death in various states of Malaysia. Seventy per cent of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the home. About half of the cases are unwitnessed. The outcome from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest remains poor. Only 10% of adult patients with nontraumatic cardiac arrest who are treated by emergency medical services survive hospital discharge.

Learn what an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is
The Basic Life Support course will guide participants to develop and implement high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation in basic life support. The two-day course will cover one rescuer BLS/CPR and two rescuers BLS/ CPR for adults. Participants will also learn what is an automated external defibrillator (AED) and how to use it to save lives. With the knowledge and skills, you learn in this course, your actions can give victims the best chance of survival.

This course seeks to convey to participants the knowledge and skills required to become a qualified trainer in conducting in-house training on BLS. One of the prerequisites of this BLS course is participants must pass their provider of the BLS course before they can proceed with the renewal course.

The instructor course is for those who wish to teach the American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) courses and/or Basic Life Support (BLS) courses. These courses will provide the instructor candidate with the necessary knowledge and skills to successfully deliver full, renewal and e-learning/skills certification provider courses.

The BLS is in high demand in the country, mainly to meet the needs of the organizations and the general community.

Course objectives and outcomes
The purpose of a BLS course is to develop proficiency in teaching, organizing, coordinating and conducting an BLS provider course. BLS instructors must have a firm working knowledge and understanding of BLS materials. They are also expected to demonstrate in-depth detailed knowledge of current emergency cardiac care. This course is to provide the participants with a training methodology and specific personal skills that will assist them in improving their knowledge and skills to develop, present and manage effective training programs.

At the end of the session, participants will learn how to approach cardiac arrest victims outside the hospital or at home. This course is a comprehensive blend of theory and practical sessions. Adequate practical materials for each participant will ensure each of them has the hands-on experience to acquire the skills needed to become a qualified trainer.

Program attendance
  • Laypersons, teachers, coaches, lifeguards, caregivers, and police officers who need to know CPR's basic principles.
  • Medical professionals working in clinics, private hospitals and wellness centers.

Course methodology
This course will cover 1 rescuer BLS/CPR, 2 rescuers BLS/ CPR and AED usage. Tutorials in powerpoint format will be used to deliver the lecture. Participants will be divided into groups, and be given a chance to be the team leader to demonstrate basic life support and cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques. The BLS main speaker and two BLS facilitators will supervise the participants in the respective groups. Each group will be focused on learning 1 rescuer BLS/CPR in Station A and 2 rescuers BLS/CPR in Station B. In Station C, the Medi-link product expert will show the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and a step-by-step guide on AED usage.

All 3 sessions are conducted with an emphasis on experiential learning; therefore, it is a high physical exertion to perform good-quality CPR.  We will teach the participants step-by-step practice of CPR and BLS for adults. The Medi-link staff will demonstrate how to use the Automated External Defibrillator.

Training techniques include:
1.Lectures with questions for information.
2.Role plays and group practical sessions.
3.Group discussions customised cases and situations.

Course duration
The Basic Life Support course is designed as a two (2) day program to be conducted in a hotel or similarly suitable public arena or, if in-house, suitable training rooms or meeting room venue.
