The vital role of palliative care: Enhancing quality of life beyond treatment
October 31, 2025
Palliative care is a specialized medical approach focused on improving the quality of life for patients facing serious illnesses. According to the World Health Organization, it aims to prevent and relieve health-related suffering by addressing physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs. Contrary to common misconceptions, palliative care is not exclusively for end-of-life situations but can be implemented from the moment of diagnosis, working alongside curative treatments to enhance patient comfort and well-being.
The importance of palliative care cannot be overstated. It provides comprehensive support that goes beyond traditional medical treatment, offering pain management, emotional support, and assistance with spiritual concerns. This holistic approach ensures that patients maintain dignity and experience the highest possible quality of life throughout their illness journey, regardless of the outcome. During the "A Promise of Dignity, United in Care" Voices for Hospices Charity Dinner, Dato' Kathleen Chew, Chairman of Hospis Malaysia, addressed critical misconceptions about palliative care. "Palliative care does not mean the end of hope. It aims to provide and improve quality of life, even while patients are undergoing other treatments," she emphasized, highlighting how this approach manages symptoms and supports patients through their illness. Malaysia is currently facing a significant challenge in meeting palliative care needs. With approximately 100,000 people requiring palliative care annually, yet less than 10% of this need being met, the country is approaching what experts describe as a crisis. The situation is expected to worsen by 2030 when Malaysia will become an aging nation, with one in six Malaysians over 60 years old, increasing the need to nearly 250,000 people per year. "We are rapidly approaching a crisis of palliative care. If we do not act now, we risk leaving thousands to suffer without the care, comfort, and dignity they deserve," warned Dato' Kathleen Chew. Hospis Malaysia is working to address this gap by training over 1,000 medical students and healthcare professionals annually through various educational platforms. The organization is also collaborating with the government to strengthen national frameworks for palliative care, advocating for its recognition as an essential component of Malaysia's healthcare system. Guest of honor Tengku Zatashah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah highlighted the broader societal implications, noting that countries like the UK, Australia, and Singapore have already integrated palliative care into their universal healthcare systems. "This is not merely a healthcare issue; it's a moral one," she stated, emphasizing that how a society cares for its most vulnerable members reflects its values. As Malaysia faces this growing challenge, the call to action is clear: palliative care must be recognized as a core pillar of patient-centered medicine, not an afterthought. By developing comprehensive policies and structures that embrace global best practices, Malaysia can ensure that all citizens receive the compassionate care they deserve, reflecting the nation's commitment to dignity and compassion for all. |
