UM Specialist Centre sets new standard in child diabetes care and smart ward innovation

UM Specialist Centre (UMSC) has set its sights on transforming healthcare delivery by embedding value-based care (VBC) at the core of its patient care and business focus. This milestone is marked by the launch of three flagship initiatives – the Paediatric Diabetes Clinic, the QWard smart ward, and the International Patient Centre – positioning UMSC as a leading hospital in quaternary care in Malaysia.

UM Specialist Centre, established as the country’s first privatized hospital under the purview of Universiti Malaya to address the challenge of brain drain from the public sector, continues to uphold its mission of medical excellence. By delivering value-based care that prioritizes better outcomes and meaningful experiences, UMSC ensures patient trust and sustainable growth which creates a thriving ecosystem where consultants are recognized, motivated to remain, and empowered to raise the standards of care even further.

Datuk Zulkarnain Md Eusope, Chairman of UMSC, said, “All of our specialist consultants are trained to the highest standards of medical excellence. They do more than treat patients – they teach, mentor, and shape the next generation of medical professionals who will lead Malaysia’s healthcare. UMSC is not just a hospital; it is a living bridge between our country’s rich healthcare legacy and its future.”

Norzaiton Senusi, Chief Executive Officer of UMSC, added, “Facilities alone don’t make a great hospital; people do. Retaining top medical talent is essential, and every initiative we launch signals to our staff that this is a place where expertise is valued, our work matters, and our future is here. This August, the month of our nation’s independence, we are reminded that the health of the people is the strength of the nation.”

Recognized as Malaysia’s leading paediatric diabetes care, the in-house clinic at UMSC credits the Paediatric Endocrinology Team under the leadership of Professor Dr Muhammad Yazid Jalaludin for setting a new benchmark in diabetes care for children. Anchored in a value-based care approach, patients receive holistic support from a multidisciplinary team, leveraging the latest technology, dietary guidance, and psychological care — improving outcomes and quality of life for young patients, particularly those with type 1 diabetes.

Redefining comfort in hospital stays
As a role model for other privatized teaching hospitals, UMSC has taken the frontier step in patient-centred care with the launch of its full-fledged smart ward, QWard. At QWard, patients enjoy a seamless and convenient experience, accessing entertainment platform such as Netflix, YouTube, meal ordering, as well as integrated medical records, test results, and treatment plans — all from a single bedside platform. By combining comfort with advanced technology, QWard embodies UMSC’s value-based care approach, enhancing patient engagement, supporting informed decision-making, and improving overall health outcomes. In addition, QWard’s digital features combined with artificial intelligence are designed to ease routine tasks, enabling nurses to focus more on direct patient care, thereby helping to mitigate the impact of the nationwide nursing shortage.

Expanding care for Indonesian patients
Indonesian patients have long turned to UMSC for specialized care, although numbers remained modest in previous years. This year, with the establishment of the International Patient Care Centre (IPC), UMSC has strengthened collaborations and expanded outreach efforts in Indonesia, resulting in greater visibility, growing awareness, and increasing interest among healthcare travellers. This positive momentum positions UMSC as a trusted choice for international patients while reinforcing Malaysia’s standing as a premier regional hub for advanced medical care.

Together, the initiatives launched strengthen UMSC’s position as a trusted destination for advanced, patient-centred healthcare. More than new facilities, they represent the continuation of UMSC’s founding mission — to keep Malaysia’s best medical minds at home, serving our people.
