Arson, animal cruelty and lack of remorse - traits of personality disorders to look out for in a personDecember 11, 2018
Four out of ten Malaysians are likely to experience some form of mental health issue in their lifetime, and psychologists anticipate that these numbers will continue to rise. Among the various mental health challenges, personality disorders often play a significant role in the behavior of certain individuals, particularly those who commit violent crimes like arson.
Infamous criminals and their Stories Here are five notorious criminals known for committing arson and exhibiting personality disorders from childhood: John Leonard Orr Background: John Leonard Orr was a former fire captain and arson investigator for the Los Angeles Fire Department. He was also linked to numerous other arson cases that caused extensive property damage. Orr was arrested in 1991 and later convicted in 2003, receiving a sentence of 27 years to life in prison. Raymond Lee Oyler Background: Raymond Lee Oyler had a history of behavioral issues and was known to have a troubled childhood, displaying antisocial tendencies. He was convicted of setting a fire that killed five members of the same family in their home in 2006, starting the blaze to cover up a previous crime. His troubled childhood was marked by abandonment and adoption into a dysfunctional family. He was arrested in 1977 and is currently serving a 25-to-life sentence. Michael Swango Background: Michael Swango showed signs of antisocial personality disorder early in life, known for his manipulative behavior and history of violence. Understanding personality disorders Dr Bharathi S Vengadasalam, Consultant Psychiatrist at Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur, explains that individuals with personality disorders often exhibit maladaptive patterns of behavior, cognition, and inner experience across various contexts, deviating from cultural norms. “You won’t see it as episodic. That’s how they are throughout their lives. It’s a very fixed form of personality. For example, antisocial personality disorder doesn’t mean they don’t have friends; it means they violate societal norms without feeling guilty,” she states. Dr Bharathi notes that such disorders usually start with conduct disorder in childhood, manifesting in behaviors like fire-setting and cruelty to animals. These forms of personality disorders are notoriously difficult to treat. Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD): Individuals may display traits such as being overly meticulous and rigid, excelling at work but becoming overly focused on perfectionism. Paranoid personality disorder (PPD): Characterized by pervasive suspiciousness and mistrust of others, individuals with PPD may seem cold and calculative, often distancing themselves from society. Dr Bharathi emphasizes that the development of these personality traits can be attributed to a mix of upbringing, temperament, and early life experiences. Understanding the link between personality disorders and criminal behavior is crucial in addressing the mental health crisis. By fostering awareness and promoting mental health literacy, society can better support those struggling with these complex issues. |
