Maintaining a healthy blood pressure reading is crucial for overall well-being. But what does a "healthy" reading really mean? Blood pressure is typically represented as a fraction, consisting of two numbers. For instance, a reading of 125/85 mm Hg provides insight into your cardiovascular health.

The top number, known as systolic pressure, measures the force of blood in the arteries when your heart beats. The bottom number, or diastolic pressure, indicates the pressure in your arteries when your heart is resting between beats. Both numbers are essential in assessing your heart health and determining if you are at risk for conditions like hypertension.

Why timing matters
According to Datuk Dr Sanjiv Joshi (pix), a consultant cardiologist at Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur, the timing of your blood pressure readings is vital. “It is usually highest in the morning. People often think that morning is the best time to take a reading, but that’s a misconception. Blood pressure can vary significantly throughout the day,” he explains.

Taking readings at different times can give a more accurate picture of your blood pressure levels. For example, stress, physical activity, and even meals can affect your readings. By measuring your blood pressure at various times—morning, afternoon, and evening—you can better understand how your body responds to daily activities and stressors.

Recognizing symptoms of high blood pressure
High blood pressure often goes unnoticed, as it can be asymptomatic. However, there are warning signs to watch for. Dr Sanjiv highlights several symptoms that may indicate elevated blood pressure, including:
  • Frequent headaches: Experiencing headaches almost daily can be a red flag.
  • Dizziness: Feeling lightheaded or dizzy may signal an issue.
  • Heaviness in the head: This sensation can also accompany high blood pressure.
  • Vision problems: Blurred or impaired vision can be linked to hypertension.
  • Irritability: Unexplained irritability or mood swings might indicate underlying health issues.
  • Palpitations: An unusually high heart rate (e.g., 120 beats per minute) without exertion is concerning and should be evaluated.

The consequences of ignoring blood pressure
Ignoring the importance of regular blood pressure monitoring can lead to severe consequences. The worst-case scenario is experiencing a stroke, a life-threatening condition that can drastically affect quality of life. Early detection and management of high blood pressure can significantly reduce the risk of such events.

Taking control of your heart health
Understanding your blood pressure and recognizing the importance of timing can empower you to take control of your heart health. Regular monitoring, combined with a healthy lifestyle—such as a balanced diet, regular exercise, and stress management—can help maintain optimal blood pressure levels.
