Dato Ir Wong Wai Ching speaks on teeing off and RMAF golf course
April 6, 2019
Golf is often seen as a competitive sport, but for many, including Dato’ Ir Wong Wai Ching, it is a relaxing escape from the pressures of life. “Everybody wants to win, but you have to take golf as a relaxing game,” he shares with a smile. Wong, a project director at MMC Gamuda KVMRT (PDP) Sdn Bhd, emphasizes the importance of managing emotions on the course, acknowledging that there are times when one has no control over them.
Wong’s journey with golf began in 1987 when he became one of the first 100 members at the Royal Malaysia Air Force (RMAF) golf course in Subang Jaya. His passion for the sport only grew from there, especially when he discovered that his university campus in Bangkok had its own golf course. “I was an enthusiast. I played more golf than I studied,” he recalls, grinning at the memory. The small campus made it easy for him to cycle to the course, often dragging his golf cart along. This enthusiasm fueled his dedication to the game, leading him to play for the next 15 years, participating not only in social rounds but also in competitive events. His proudest moments came when he consistently won his company’s annual golfing championship. The common dilemma among golfers As Wong’s career progressed, however, the demands of work began to encroach on his time for golf. “Besides work, most golfers found it challenging to split time between the game and family,” he notes. This struggle is familiar to many, as balancing professional responsibilities with personal passions can be tough. Wong humorously adds that “the wives were unhappy,” often prompting golfers to bring back compensatory gifts from tournaments to keep the peace at home. Taking the game international Although Wong may not play as frequently outside Malaysia, his love for golf has taken him to over six countries, including Hanoi, Cambodia, Jakarta, Bangkok, and Hong Kong. One of his favorite courses is the Mission Hills Golf Club in Shenzhen, a short drive from Hong Kong. This renowned club boasts over 12 fantastic courses, making it a golfer's paradise. Wong’s story highlights the dual nature of golf: it is both a competitive sport and a means of relaxation. For him, the key is finding balance—between work, family, and the game he loves. Whether you’re a seasoned golfer or a newcomer, remember that golf can be a wonderful way to unwind and connect with others, both on and off the course. |
