In today's fast-paced world, food is not just sustenance; it’s a cornerstone of our health. Yet, not all foods are created equal, and understanding how different foods interact with your body is crucial for maintaining optimal health. Dr Janethy Balakrishnan (pix), President of the Association of Integrative Medicine Malaysia (AIMM), highlighted the importance of recognizing both anti-inflammatory and pro-inflammatory foods during her presentation at the 5th International Integrative Medicine Conference 2024. Themed "Healthspan - The Science and Art of Wellbeing," the conference delved into the nuances of food sensitivities and their impact on health.

Pro-Inflammatory vs anti-inflammatory foods: What you need to know
“Knowing your anti-inflammatory and pro-inflammatory foods is vital,” said Dr Janethy. The foods you consume can either contribute to inflammation in your body or help reduce it. Inflammation is a natural response to injury or infection, but chronic inflammation can lead to various health issues, including autoimmune disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and more.

Pro-inflammatory foods include processed sugars, refined carbohydrates, and trans fats, which can trigger inflammation by increasing the production of pro-inflammatory molecules like cytokines. On the other hand, anti-inflammatory foods such as leafy greens, nuts, fatty fish, and berries contain antioxidants and other compounds that help combat inflammation.

Beyond food: Holistic health practices
While food plays a pivotal role in managing inflammation, Dr Janethy emphasized that it's not the only factor. “Oral or rectal detox is not a necessity, but for success, you still need to prescribe to sleep hygiene, stress management, strength training, spiritual well-being, and social well-being,” she noted. These holistic health practices are essential in maintaining a balanced life and ensuring that your body can effectively metabolize the nutrients it receives.

Food as medicine: A personalized approach
The concept of food as medicine is gaining traction, particularly in the realm of personalized medicine. Each individual’s body reacts differently to various foods, and understanding these reactions is key to optimizing health. “Use food as your personal prescription for healing, health, and well-being, besides just relying on supplements,” advised Dr Janethy. This approach is part of a highly personalized journey to well-being, where diet becomes a tailored prescription rather than a one-size-fits-all solution.

Understanding food sensitivities and intolerances
Food sensitivities, once considered rare, are now recognized as a significant public health concern. Adverse reactions to foods can manifest as allergies, hypersensitivities, or intolerances, with symptoms ranging from migraines to gastrointestinal distress. Interestingly, these conditions often test negative for traditional allergy tests, making them difficult to diagnose.

Numerous studies have shown that individuals with food sensitivities have elevated levels of Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies in their blood. These antibodies are involved in the body’s immune response and can indicate sensitivity to certain foods. The most common food intolerances involve dairy, eggs, gluten, yeast, and nightshades.

The role of IgG and other antibodies
Understanding the different types of antibodies is crucial in managing food sensitivities. IgG, which accounts for about 80% of antibodies in the blood, plays a major role in defending the body against pathogens. It can cross the placenta, providing passive immunity to a fetus. This is why children often share food intolerances with their mothers until they develop their own immune systems after the age of two.

Another antibody, IgE, is associated with immediate allergic reactions, while IgA and IgM play roles in early immune responses and mucosal immunity. These antibodies help the body identify and respond to potential threats, including certain foods that the body may mistakenly recognize as harmful.

Leaky gut syndrome and inflammation
Leaky gut syndrome, a condition where the intestinal lining becomes permeable, allowing undigested food particles and toxins to enter the bloodstream, is closely linked to food sensitivities. This increased permeability can lead to chronic inflammation and a host of other health issues, including autoimmune diseases, migraines, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

“You could be eating really energy-dense food, but still be malnourished due to a leaky gut,” explained Dr Janethy. This condition underscores the importance of choosing the right foods and understanding how they interact with your body’s immune system.

The impact of food on metabolic health
Consuming foods that trigger an immune response can lead to insulin resistance, abdominal obesity, and other metabolic disorders. Patients who adhere to diets based on their food sensitivity test results have seen significant improvements in body composition, inflammation markers, and overall health.

For individuals with chronic conditions such as IBS, arthritis, or migraines, eliminating foods that trigger immune responses can lead to substantial improvements. In children with autism, dietary adjustments to remove intolerant foods have shown promising results in managing symptoms.

Dietary trends and personalized nutrition
While popular diets like the ketogenic or carnivore diet may offer benefits, they are not universally effective. Dr Janethy pointed out that these diets should be tailored to individual needs, particularly if food sensitivities are identified. “The best results come from a personalized approach, where you can biohack your diet to suit your body’s unique needs,” she said.

Transitioning from a vegetarian to a vegan diet, for instance, can lead to health improvements by eliminating common allergens like dairy and eggs. However, these foods don’t need to be excluded permanently. Through guided elimination diets and food challenge tests, individuals can reintroduce foods in a way that supports their health and well-being.

Understanding the intricate relationship between food, inflammation, and overall health is essential for anyone looking to optimize their healthspan. By identifying pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory foods, managing food sensitivities, and adopting a personalized approach to nutrition, you can unlock the potential of food as medicine.
