Sports medicine: Expert care for injuries and rehabilitationOctober 4, 2024
"What is sports medicine?" is a common question. Sports medicine is a specialized branch of medicine that focuses on preventing, diagnosing, treating, and rehabilitating musculoskeletal injuries. These injuries can occur not only in individuals involved in sports and physical activities but also in those injured during everyday tasks, such as a sprained ankle while descending stairs or a strained shoulder while lifting objects.
In many countries, this field of medicine is referred to as 'sports and exercise medicine'. Therefore, in addition to managing musculoskeletal injuries, a sports medicine physician also evaluates and prescribes safe exercise and physical activities for individuals with non-communicable diseases. This involves designing customized exercise programs tailored to specific patient needs and health goals, aiming to improve overall health and well-being through regular physical activity. These efforts help in preventing illness, reducing disease morbidities, and improving quality of life. Conservative management techniques A sports medicine physician focuses on treating musculoskeletal injuries without surgery. This involves conservative management which includes managing pain, reducing inflammation and swelling, ensuring adequate protection of the injured tissue, and providing personalized rehabilitation. They may also administer ultrasound-guided injections if needed. Musculoskeletal rehabilitation is a crucial aspect of sports medicine, employing a systematic approach to assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation exercises. This approach aims to restore mobility, strength, flexibility, endurance, and function. The goal is not only to treat the injury but also to prevent re-injury and optimize performance. When managing an injury, a holistic approach is essential. Factors such as nutrition, sleep, stress management, mental resilience, and lifestyle habits are all considered to ensure the patient achieves their full potential following an injury while maintaining overall well-being. Technological advancements in sports medicine Like every field of medicine, sports medicine is continuously evolving. Today, objective tools such as isokinetic machines are used to measure strength and endurance, while devices for assessing and training balance and proprioception are also available. In centres where financial constraints limit access to isokinetic machines, handheld dynamometers can be used to objectively assess strength. While Artificial Intelligence (AI) is still in its early stages in sports medicine, there are many AI-driven algorithms, devices, and research initiatives being developed to predict and prevent injuries, aid in injury assessment, optimise recovery plans, monitor rehabilitation progress, and predict return to play. It is important to note that AI should never replace the clinical judgment and expertise of healthcare professionals; instead, it should complement their knowledge and skills as a valuable tool. Choosing the right treatment approach After sustaining an injury, individuals often must decide whether conservative management or surgical intervention is necessary. Healthcare professionals now involve patients in discussions about treatment options, allowing them to choose the best approach for their needs. While the initial instinct after an injury may be to avoid surgery, some injuries, especially in young and active individuals, may benefit from surgical intervention, while others can effectively manage conservatively. Therefore, our role today is to comprehensively assess individuals, understand their goals, and collaborate with them and their families to design highly personalized management plans. The continuous process of rehabilitation The field of sports medicine is both intriguing and challenging. It involves managing problems but providing patients with hope that they can regain a normal, functional, and active lifestyle through recovery. Rehabilitation is not just a procedure or medication, but a continuous process. Trusting this process is crucial for achieving the best outcomes following an injury, whether managed surgically or conservatively. |
