In the fast-paced realm of healthcare, where decisions can mean life or death, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics has emerged as a transformative force. Spearheading this revolution is Professor Dr R Logeswaran (pix), Dean of the Faculty of Computing & Digital Technology at HELP University. With an average retrospective error rate of 30% in radiology, the need for precision is paramount. Here, AI steps in, offering a reliable companion to aid in decision-making processes.

Exploring AI-based computer-aided diagnosis (CAD)
Enhanced image interpretation: AI enhances the qualitative interpretation of medical images, compensating for factors like low image quality and visual fatigue.

Second opinions: AI provides valuable second opinions, augmenting the diagnostic process and fostering confidence in decision-making.

Assessing radiologist performance: By evaluating radiologist performance, AI facilitates continuous improvement and ensures quality standards.

Utilizing computer vision: Leveraging computer vision, AI assists in image enhancement, segmentation, and feature extraction, refining diagnostic accuracy.

Unlocking the potential of robotics in healthcare
In parallel, robotics emerges as a game-changer in healthcare, offering a myriad of applications:
  • Healthcare analytics: By harnessing vast datasets and patient histories, robotics facilitates personalized treatment plans tailored to individual needs and lifestyles.
  • Disease prediction: Analyzing lifestyle factors alongside medical data enables more accurate disease prediction, optimizing healthcare interventions.
  • Diagnostic advancements: AI-driven systems achieve remarkable accuracies, surpassing human capabilities in diagnosing conditions like meningitis, lung diseases, and heart ailments.
  • Enhancing treatment planning: Multimodal analysis enables comprehensive treatment planning, integrating information from various diagnostic modalities for a holistic approach.
  • Empowering patients: Smartphone attachments equipped with AI empower patients to conduct self-diagnosis, fostering data-driven healthcare decisions.

The role of robotics in surgery and caregiving
Robotic surgery: Robotics augments surgical precision, offering improved dexterity, visualization, and patient outcomes, while reducing surgeon fatigue and recovery times.

Robot caregivers: Robotics enhances quality of life for patients through companionship, assistance with daily tasks, and reminders.

Sanitation and pharmaceutical assistance: Robots ensure sterile environments, aid in pharmaceutical development, and streamline drug dispensing and delivery processes.

Rehabilitation and telemedicine: Robotics facilitates safer rehabilitation processes and enables remote consultations, administration of medicine, and collaborative diagnoses.

Overcoming barriers to AI adoption
Despite its potential, AI adoption faces several hurdles", adds Professor Dr R Logeswaran. Among them are:
  • Resistance from traditionalists: Some healthcare professionals view AI as a threat, resisting its integration into diagnostic workflows.
  • Skepticism and regulatory hurdles: The opaque nature of machine learning algorithms and regulatory caution hinder widespread adoption.
  • Risk and legal concerns: Potential risks of bodily harm, legal complications, and data privacy breaches pose significant challenges.

Envisioning the future of AI in healthcare
Explosive growth: The AI healthcare market is poised for exponential growth, projected to reach $208.2 billion by 2030.

Seamless integration: AI will seamlessly integrate into healthcare systems, enhancing automation, services, and innovation.

Medical breakthroughs: AI will play a pivotal role in the discovery of new medical cures and treatments, revolutionizing the healthcare landscape.

As AI and robotics continue to redefine healthcare, the future holds boundless possibilities. With innovation at its core, this technological revolution promises to usher in an era of unparalleled precision, efficiency, and patient-centric care.
