Vantive expands recycling programs across Southeast Asia and Pacific to cut medical waste

Turning waste into worth: Empty plastic bags and tubing from home-based peritoneal dialysis are collected and recycled into new products like hospital flooring, water-resistant boots, and hoses—thanks to a sustainable partnership with local recycling companies.

Vantive, a vital organ therapy company with a 70-year legacy of kidney care innovation, today announced the expansion of its recycling programs for plastic waste from home dialysis to now include Malaysia, Thailand, Australia and New Zealand.
The environmental sustainability program to reduce plastic waste and support home dialysis patients and local hospitals in Southeast Asia and the Pacific region will be showcased alongside Vantive’s digital health and therapy innovation at this year’s annual International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis (ISPD) Pacific Chapter Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The recycling programs collect the empty plastic bags and plastic tubing used in home-based peritoneal dialysis (PD), and in partnership with local recycling companies, transform the waste into new products including hospital flooring, water-resistant boots, and hoses. “Vantive is committed to innovative products and services that create a more economically and environmentally sustainable healthcare system as part of our mission to extend lives and expand possibilities,” said Vantive Asia Pacific President, Steven Flynn. “Home dialysis empowers people with chronic kidney disease to manage their therapy, while also helping to reduce the environmental impact and workforce burden on the hospital system. The advanced services of our sustainability programs, including the management of hospital waste from dialysis therapy, help to create a healthier environment that leads to healthier populations.” Malaysia The 'Jom Recycle' aims to provide a recycling solution to the waste management of empty peritoneal dialysis (PD) fluids bags. Launched in 2024, the recycling program is a collaboration between Vantive, NKF (National Kidney Foundation) Malaysia, Zuellig Pharma Malaysia, and Fig Metal Industries (formerly Dialog ESECO Sdn Bhd), alongside recycling service providers Cenviro-EPIC. Facilitated by the Business Council for Sustainable Development Malaysia (BCSDM), the program has adopted the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) concept for the healthcare sector. As part of the program, empty plastic bags from peritoneal dialysis are collected and recycled into new products including tote bags and medication pouches. Thailand Vantive has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with key partners to recycle used peritoneal dialysis (PD) fluids bags into recycled PVC floor tiles. Launched in 2024 at the Prince Suvarnabhumi Hospital, the initiative between Vantive, Principal Capital Public Company Limited (PRINC), SCG Chemicals (SCGC), and Dynoflex aims to recycle approximately 145 tons of PVC plastic waste each month. Australia and New Zealand Vantive supports more than 1,000 home-based peritoneal dialysis patients with the recycling of their PVC plastic waste including empty bags and tubing from PD therapy. The waste is collected from the patients’ homes at no charge to the patient and in partnership with local waste management companies is recycled by third-party manufacturers into waterproof boots and hoses. Cardboard delivery boxes are also recycled as part of the service. Meeting patient and clinician needs at ISPD 2025 Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is projected to become the fifth leading cause of death globally by 2040. As aging populations and rising rates of diabetes and hypertension drive this growing CKD patient population and increasing rates of dialysis, the pressure on health systems is intensifying. As a new standalone company, Vantive is showcasing at the ISPD 2025 conference in Malaysia key products, digital solutions, advanced services and clinical studies that aim to help healthcare providers make better use of their limited resources while enhancing patients’ freedom of choice and quality of life through equitable access to home-based therapies.
