Pelvic pain is a common health concern that affects individuals of all sexes, although it is often associated with the reproductive organs in women and people assigned female at birth (AFAB).

What is pelvic pain?
Pelvic pain refers to discomfort felt in the pelvic region, which can stem from a variety of sources, including reproductive organs, pelvic bones, and internal non-reproductive organs. While it is frequently associated with women and AFAB individuals, pelvic pain can affect people of all sexes. It is important to recognize that pelvic pain is not exclusive to reproductive issues and can have numerous causes.

What causes pelvic pain?
The causes of pelvic pain are diverse, ranging from infections and sexually transmitted infections to kidney stones and intestinal disorders. In women and AFAB individuals, pelvic pain may also be related to pregnancy, menstruation, and various reproductive health conditions such as endometriosis, uterine fibroids, and ovarian cysts. Psychogenic pain, stemming from stress or past psychological traumas, can also contribute to pelvic discomfort.

Symptoms
Pelvic pain can manifest in various ways, often accompanied by additional symptoms such as vaginal bleeding, menstrual pain, dysuria, constipation, bloating, rectal bleeding, pain during sex, fever, hip pain, and groin pain. These symptoms can significantly impact an individual's quality of life and well-being.

Care and treatment
Diagnosing the cause of pelvic pain involves a thorough review of symptoms and medical history, often accompanied by physical exams and diagnostic tests. These may include blood and urine tests, pregnancy tests, vaginal cultures, abdominal and pelvic X-rays, laparoscopy, stool samples, lower endoscopy, ultrasound, CT scans, and more. Once the underlying cause is identified, treatment can be tailored accordingly, ranging from medication and surgery to physical therapy and psychological support.

Living with chronic pelvic pain
Chronic pelvic pain can be a challenging condition to manage, but there are several strategies that individuals can employ to alleviate symptoms at home. These include taking over-the-counter pain relievers, engaging in regular exercise, applying heat, avoiding smoking, taking supplements, practicing relaxation exercises, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It is crucial to work closely with healthcare providers to develop an effective management plan.

Prevention and when to seek medical attention
While some cases of pelvic pain cannot be prevented, adopting a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, and maintaining regular check-ups with healthcare providers can help reduce the risk of developing pelvic pain. It is essential to seek immediate medical attention for sudden, severe, or persistent pelvic pain, as well as for symptoms that disrupt daily life or indicate a more serious underlying condition.
